Athletics Day
By Mr Peter Currie
Newcomb Athletics Carnival
Landy Field, Monday 1 March 2021
Its Athletics season and the big question is can Harrison make it a hat trick of victories? In both 2018 and 2019, they won the overall trophy for best house in athletics. Last year, you will remember that the carnival couldn’t be held due to Covid 19. They didn’t have it their own way though in 2019. Up until the relays, the mighty frogs, Drysdale, were leading.
We would love every student in the school to get involved in this fun day. Yes, many will be exhausted by the end of it, but it will provide you with memories that will last forever.
Don’t forget to dress up in your house colours. Make sure you bring something to eat as there is no canteen this year. Bring either drinks or your drink bottle to fill up during the day.
Some questions that people have been asking: Will Mr Unmack dress in yellow?
Will Mr Murphy tell a joke over the loud hailer, has Mrs Dyer planned some “never seen before” novelty events and what interesting fact has Mr Horsted for us?
Don’t forget to have permission forms submitted via Compass by Thursday 25th February.
Virtual World
By Ms Needham
The year 9 GROW teaching team spent the afternoon with Elly from the Geelong Tech School learning how to use Tiltbrush VR for their upcoming unit ’Virtual X’. In this unit, students will work in teams to conceptualise, design and produce a virtual exhibit to be included in a public exhibition at ACMI, Federation Square, later in the year. We can’t wait to invite you to the show!
Values For Life
By Year 94 Students
On February the 19th, Sharon and Tim from Values for Life, visited our school to talk to us about identity, acceptance, goals and resilience. To begin with, year nine classes joined together to make one group and was introduced to Tim. Tim summarised what we would be doing throughout the day, and taught us a few new games. Tim spoke to all of us about challenging ourselves and moving past our mistakes.
Then, we split off into two groups - Females and Males to talk about different issues for different genders and breaking down stereotypes. Sharon spoke to the female group, whilst Tim spoke to the male group. Sharon spoke to us about beauty standards that the media portrays to us. She told us, it was okay to be insecure, but we should not worry too much about how we look. She told us now a days, teenage girls are exposed to unrealistic stereotypes and gave us strategies to challenge these. Sharon also talked to us about acceptance, and how our bad days can be made so much worse by the behaviour of others, but we have choices as to how we take this on board.
