Issue 10, 2022
5th April, 2022
From the Principal Team
End of Term
Term 1, 2022 will conclude at 2.30pm on Friday 8th April. We wish all members of the Newcomb Secondary College Community the very best for the Easter holiday break. Term 2 commences on Tuesday, 26th April.
End of Term Progress Report
Later this week students will have their Term 1 reports shared with them on Compass. As outlined in our previous Newsletter, the aim of the new look progress reports was to provide a report product that was easy to read and aligned more cohesively with all learning models here at Newcomb SC, namely our School Values of Learning/Respect and Working Together, the Positive Futures Framework and our School Wide Positive Behaviour focus.
The areas of focus on the reports will be:
Learning
- Prepared for Learning- Attends class prepared for, and able to, engage in learning.
- Participation and Completion- Participates effectively and completes required tasks to the best of their ability.
Respect
- Demonstrates Regard for Others- Demonstrates regard for all members of the school community (peers, teachers, mentors, wellbeing, office staff)
- Demonstrates Self-awareness- Demonstrates awareness of their person, those around them and how to coexist in the world. Can self-regulate when necessary.
Working Together
- Collaborates with others- Is able to collaborate with peers, teachers, mentors and their learning community to achieve successful learning and project outcomes.
- Communicates effectively- Demonstrates written, verbal, digital and other communication skills for the effective transfer and receipt of information.
We look forward to sharing our new look Reports with you later this week.
PST Interviews- Thursday April 28 (4-7pm) & Friday April 29 (9-12pm)
In the first week of Term 2, we will be conducting our Parent/Student/Teacher Conferences. The sessions available for the conferences are Thursday April 28 (4-7pm) and Friday April 29 (9-12pm). Conferences will take place at Newcomb Secondary College and we encourage you all to take part in the conversations.
Parents and Guardians will be able to select a suitable time for bookings on Compass as of now.
The P/S/T conferences are an important part of supporting student learning outcomes as it is well understood that a student will achieve most, and maximise their potential when supported by a team. As such, it is important that all members of a student team have a shared understanding of where their learning is at and what can be actioned to make further improvements/further growth.

2022 Open Night
It has certainly been an industrious and positive end, to what has felt a busy and testing term… Most immediately springing to mind is the annual College Information Night. The night saw hundreds of guests and prospective enrolments pass through our school site, to meet with members of our school community and learn firsthand about all of our programs. A great deal of work went into the organisation of this event, and the success of the occasion is an immense credit to all those involved. In particular, we could not have run such an overwhelmingly successful event, without the support of so many students – thank you, to each of you, for giving your time to us, and for conducting yourself in such a admirable manner.
2021 Dux Recognition Ceremony - Daina Graham
2021 Dux Recognition Ceremony
Daina Graham
Alexander Graham Bell, the inventor of the telephone, said “When one door closes another door opens”. What an appropriate aphorism for the last couple of years. This was proved yet again by the resounding success of our inaugural “Dux Recognition Ceremony” last week. Whilst traditionally at NSC we would announce and award the Dux at the Celebration Assembly at the end of the year, the challenges of 2021 lead to a delay in this information being available. Therefore, in order to officially recognise our 2021 Dux, Daina Graham, we held a ceremony exclusively for this purpose. A ceremony which included an opportunity for VCE and Year 10 ECO students to ask questions and advice of Daina, an opportunity they took eager advantage of. Daina answered questions for over half an hour to a rapt audience and her wisdom was greatly appreciated.

I’m writing to provide you with an update regarding the Andrews Labor Government’s Get Active Kids Program. Families can now apply for $200 Get Active Kids voucher online which can then be redeemed at a registered Get Active Kids Voucher Activity Provider – such as a local sporting club or organisation. Registered activity providers will lodge voucher codes with the Government to be credited the costs of registration and/or membership fees, while vouchers can also be used for costs associated with uniforms and equipment. Clubs, associations and organisations must be registered as a Get Active Kids Voucher Activity Provider to be able to redeem vouchers. To be eligible they must be affiliated with a recognised State Sporting Association or equivalent governing body. The program is open to Victorian children aged up to 18, named on a valid Commonwealth Health Care Card or Pensioner Concession Card and named on a valid Medicare Card at the time of application. A special consideration stream is also available to support children in care, temporary or provisional visa holders, undocumented migrants and international students up to 18 years at the time of application. Applications for this round close at 5pm on 31 May 2022. To support the transition to the new voucher claim system, families can continue to claim reimbursement for expenses already incurred in this round. To apply or for more information visit the program website https://getactive.vic.gov.au/vouchers/. I encourage all schools to circulate this important opportunity with their contacts in our community. My office is happy to assist interested families with any further queries, and can be reached on 5221 4821 at christine.couzens@parliament.vic.gov.au |
