Staffing News
Congratulations to Ms Melissa Wray who has been successful in gaining a position at Virtual School Victoria for the remainder of 2022. Melissa has been a wonderful addition to the staff at NSC and we wish her all the best in her new position.
We welcome Mrs Rhiannon Leech to our teaching staff and congratulate her on her new role with NSC teaching English and Humanities, Rhiannon will commence later this month with Ms Christie Damon covering in the interim.
NAPLAN
Over Weeks 3 and 4, students in Years 7 and 9 will be joining their peers from across the country in participating in the National Assessment Program for Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN).
Unlike previous years, this year students will complete NAPLAN in their regular class groupings and through accessing an online platform. A number of classes participated in practice NAPLAN activities in Term 1, and based on the feedback from those involved, we feel completing the tasks in this way will amount to a less overwhelming and more comfortable experience for the students overall.
NAPLAN provides individual students with a snapshot on how they are progressing with their development of core skills in literacy and numeracy, as they progress through their school years. The data gathered through this process can also provide teachers with greater insight to how they can assist the learning outcomes of their students, through the provision of individual adjustments and supports.
We will share more information about the NAPLAN processes for students, parents and carers on Compass. But please don’t hesitate to contact us for any information or concerns.
As with anything, we certainly don’t wish for any of our students to feel overwhelmed by the idea and experience of NAPLAN completion – we just ask that everybody embraces this challenge to their full potential, and makes the best of it.

There are so many reasons to go back to your old school and one of them is to see old friends and reflect on the people, teachers and areas of study that have helped to shape your life.
On Thursday 5th May, Mick Ryan and Jannalli Lilburne from Wathaurong Co-Op came to meet our NSC Koorie students and some friends from other classes. Lillie Butcher stood proudly before our guests and audience to share a personal rendition of acknowledgement of country that was heartfelt.
Mick shared his post school pathway with us, speaking candidly about his educational journey at Newcomb Secondary College and beyond to his current role at Wathaurong.
Mick exuded warmth, passion and enthusiasm for his work in Health Promotions, to build strong relationships and trust with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community here in Geelong.
We hope that Mick will come back and play some tunes with our NSC students sometime soon.
After sharing some delicious morning tea together, Mick was keen to take a tour around the school and meet up with some familiar faces such as Mr Davis and Mr Crowther. Great to see that our former students are helping to build a strong, healthy and creative community.
Until next time.

Not sure what happens in a foundry?
Maybe you are interested in an engineering career?
Recently Logan W, who has an interest in engineering, had the opportunity to visit the foundry at IXL Metal Castings.
Thanks to the General Manager Sean who showed Logan around and gave him a very comprehensive tour of what is being manufactured at IXL. Now Logan has a much clearer understanding of the work being carried out by an engineer in a foundry.
IXL are very keen to support the career aspirations of any students interested in Engineering. See Mrs Boyanton or Mr Horsted if you are interested.
In My Classes
It is so great to see our 9/10 Ceramics Glass Class students experience success with their artwork. I hope they all feel very proud of what they have achieved. Over the past few weeks our artists have been designing and making intricate glass mosaic art panels. They have incorporated design elements and principles and have been fantastic with following all the OH&S rules when working in this new studio environment. Keep up the great work. - Mrs Honeywell

Sports Update
On the 17th and 24th of February 2022 Newcomb Secondary held our annual House Swimming and Athletics Carnivals. The participation from all students attending was fantastic to see, particularly after having missed out on our Swimming Carnival in 2021. In particular there were some fantastic individual efforts, with Year 8 Shayla Maimuir who continued to participate in different events for her house, even when she was absolutely exhausted. We had Presley Johannesen in Year 12 and Phoebe Cobb in Year 10 partake in 11 and 10 Athletic Events respectively. Year 7 Spencer Fairthorne, Year 10 Cody Englert & Year 9 Nick Maultby all competed in 9 athletic events on the day. It was also fantastic to see great participation from students in our novelty events, such as the three legged race, egg and spoon race, raft race and lilo race.
Some of the highlights from our carnivals included seeing so many staff and students get into the spirit of the carnival, with different wigs, coloured zinc cream, blow up suits, and an NSC FIRST, with our NSC athletics Tik Tok. A big thank you to Phoebe Cobb for organising this, and please look out for this on our NSC Social media pages.
We operated in a different fashion to previous carnivals, with the addition of our COVID Marshalls, Kea, Jo & Crystal. A big thank you to your team for keeping us safe with hand sanitizer and ensuring social distancing where possible. Year 11 Cooper Rowbottom & Year 11 Eliza Glembin were also instrumental in the day’s success, distributing food and drinks to our staff on the track and field, which I know they greatly appreciated.
Finally, a big thankyou to all our teachers and support staff, for all your work at the carnivals. It made the day a great experience for our students, other staff and our school community.

ONLINE ASSESSMENT OF ANXIETY DISORDERS IN AUSTRALIAN ADOLESCENTS
Is your teenager frequently nervous in social situations, overly worried about lots of little things, afraid to be away from you, or afraid of specific objects or situations (e.g., dogs, doing speeches at school)?
At Macquarie University, we are conducting an online study that includes a thorough assessment of anxiety concerns in adolescents 12 to 17 years. We are providing this service online via Telehealth and at no cost to families. Participants will also receive a $30 gift voucher as a thank-you for their time.
If you believe your teenager may be experiencing anxiety, please contact bddproject@mq.edu.au to out more about the project.
