Issue 22, 2022
26th July, 2022
From the Principal Team
The days are getting longer, ever so slightly, but winter is still very much upon us…
After two years of a typically low social interaction, it comes as no surprise to see the prevalence of colds and influenza, in addition to COVID-19, moving through our community. In light of this, we still encourage all of our school community members to focus on preserving safe and responsible hygienic practices, and to take care of one’s own health wherever possible!
There have been some very exciting developments involving students from across our year levels over these recent weeks. Included in this was the completion of the Victoria Police ‘Girl In Charge’ leadership initiative, which a number of our students in Years 9 and 10 were involved with. This program, led by a number of Geelong-based police officers, focused on building leadership capacity and personal confidence through a range of netball-based training activities and workshops.
The ‘Girl In Charge’ program consisted of a range of challenging and engaging sessions focusing on skills and fitness development, along with inspiring conversations with significant key note presenters. Whilst participating in a graduation ceremony in our College Auditorium, our students reflected on the powerful impact of the program, and its contribution towards increased fitness, organisation, motivation and confidence. Congratulations to our students for their successful completion of this great program, and thank you to Chiara Ercoli and Jane Osborne from our College Wellbeing Team for your work in making this happen!
Over the course of these recent weeks, we have also seen our Year 9 cohort participate in the Geelong Tertiary Futures Program (GTFP). This has entailed excursions to The Gordon, to participate in hands-on opportunities to learn about vocational career pathways, and to build familiarity of a valued school partner and provider of lifelong learning opportunities. Similarly, our Year 10 students recently participated in their Deakin Discovery Day, to experience the exceptional and nation-leading university that we are so fortunate to have in our own backyard. Thank you to all of the staff involved with these important extra-curricular activities, and to the students for so admirably and positively representing our College during these events.
There may still be some challenging times ahead of us all this term, and this is likely to test our resilience and commitment at stages. However, the success of the events listed above, in addition to the wonderful acts of kindness and dedication to learning that we see onsite every day, leaves us feeling buoyed by the possibility of what’s to come.

Last Wednesday the Victoria Police run program 'Girl In Charge' was completed with a graduation ceremony at Newcomb Secondary College.
There were two Superintendents that attended the College along with Senior Sergeant's and our own Leadership team to see what the girls had accomplished during their program.
Students spoke about some of the gains of the program including that some are now umpiring Saturday netball comp and getting paid! Others spoke of the fact that combining Year 9 and Year 10 was so great to get to know others in different year levels and now call them friends.
The highlights of the program were the guest speakers such as Tegan from the Melbourne Vixens and going to the Strong Woman Geelong Gym with Karen Siems.
We congratulate all our Year 9 and 10 students who participated in the group and gave so much effort and energy each week.
Thanks to both Kylie's, Kaitlin and Susie for offering this amazing program to NSC and allowing our students to participate 🙂
School Wide Positive Behaviour

How This Term’s Focus Areas Appear In Our School Wide Positive Behaviour.
In the first assembly of the term, our Acting Principal Mr. McLeod outlined our focus areas for the term. Our School Wide Positive Behaviour Support team eagerly leapt upon these, seeing the similarities with our SWPBS values and behavior descriptors. Below are the connections they have made.
1. Be here every day. - Arrive to class on-time and remain in the classroom for the entirety of each session.
Is our SWPBS’ “I am punctual.”
2. Be prepared for Learning – Both with the correct learning materials and a positive attitude towards learning.
Is our SWPBS’ “I am punctual, with my diary and equipment ready to learn.”
3. Present proudly – Including wearing the correct uniform.
Is our SWPBS’ “I wear my school uniform correctly”.
4. Bringing a positive attitude and proactive behavior.
Is our SWPBS’ “I am a positive team member” and “I support the learning of others” to every class."
5. Complete all set tasks to the best of your ability.
Is our SWPBS’ “I ask questions when I don’t understand” and “I make the most of all learning opportunities”.
6. Build and maintain positive relationships with all members of the college community.
Is our SWPBS’ 'I value other people's differences'.
7. Proactive and responsible conflict resolution strategies.
Is our SWPBS’ “I am kind to others” and “I keep unkind words and thoughts to myself.”
8. Maintain your wellbeing – Physical and mental. Identify and use your coping strategies and seek support if needed.
Is our SWPBS’“I maintain a high standard of personal hygiene.” and “I improve my skills and health by being active.”
9. Be a positive role model for Newcomb Secondary College when in the community.
Is our SWPBS’ “I am proud of my school.”
10. Enjoy your school experience. It is a very important time in your life, one that goes very quickly, and one that you should look back upon fondly in the future. We don’t have a single statement to link to this focus area, but that makes it no less important.
Sports Update
During week 2, Newcomb Secondary College students filled sides in Intermediate Badminton and Netball, Senior Boys and Girls Netball, Badminton and Table Tennis.
It was fantastic to see great participation and effort with our Senior Badminton, Intermediate Girls Netball and Senior Boys Netball teams all successfully making the semi finals and winning their pools.
A big thank you to Mrs. Angelevski, Mr. Klingberg, Ms. Crane, Ms. Jones and Mr. McCurry for all the coaching and training with their respective teams.

Year 9 Geelong Tertiary Futures Program 2022.
Each year, our Year 9 students undertake tertiary units through the Gordon Tafe in 'Workplace Communication' and 'Occupational Health and Safety' in their GROW classes. As part of this program, students spend 4 days at the Gordon in Term 3 where they are involved in practical 'Taster Classes' ahead of course selection for 2023. This allows them to try possible VET (Vocational Education and Training) courses that we can assist in enrolling them which can contribute towards their senior programs. A wonderful opportunity for our students to engage with a tertiary provider, and have fun in hands on experiences as they go!

COVID Update
FACE MASKS
The Victorian Department of Health strongly recommends that face masks are worn in indoor settings.
As a result, we are asking all students aged 8 and over and all staff in all schools across Victoria to wear masks when in class (except where removing a mask is necessary for clear communication) from now to the end of winter.
Students will not be required or expected to wear masks when outdoors, and this expectation will not stop student participation in the full range of school activities, including music, sport and performances.
We are asking for your support in explaining to your child or children the importance of this simple step that will help keep our schools as safe as possible.
We also ask that you make sure your child (or children) takes a mask to school (and wears it if they are travelling on public transport) or collects a mask when they arrive at school.
We all appreciate how important it is for students to be back at school. This action will help make sure as many students and staff as possible are protected from COVID and other winter illness.
Thank for your help with this collective effort to keep our communities safe and healthy.
Wearing masks is a simple step we can all take this winter to reduce the number of COVID-19 cases and ensure our schools are as safe as possible.
EXEMPTIONS FOR TESTING AND ISOLATION
The period of time when someone is considered a recently confirmed case and therefore exempt from testing and isolation requirements has been reduced from the previous 12 weeks to 4 weeks.
This means that staff and children who are household contacts of people with COVID-19 are now required to undertake the testing and isolation requirements from 4 weeks after completing isolation with COVID-19. Previously, this exemption period was 12 weeks.
After the 4-week exemption period, students and staff members who are a household contact of a new COVID-19 case, must follow the rules for household contacts, including reporting this to their school.
As part of this they must take 5 rapid antigen tests (RATs) over 7 days and receive negative test results and wear a face mask (if over 8 years old) in indoor spaces.
Families and staff will also have to report being a household contact to their school after this 4-week period.
COVID UPDATE
New household contact information:
- You are a household contact if you have spent more than four hours with someone who has COVID-19 inside a house, accommodation or care facility.
- Your household contact period is 7 days.
- You don’t have to quarantine during this 7-day period if you:
- test negative using a rapid antigen test on 5 days of the 7-day period (with tests spaced at least 24 hours apart)
- wear a mask indoors when outside your home
- do not visit hospitals or care facilities
- notify your employer or education facility
- If you do not follow these steps, you must quarantine for the 7-day period – and you are required to get tested on Day 1 and Day 6.
- If you test positive on a rapid antigen test, you must report your result and isolate for 7 days. Visit Reporting your result page for more information.
- Household contacts are also referred to as close contacts.
Rapid Antigen Testing
Testing change:
- from Monday 23 May 2022, it is recommended RATs are used by students and staff when symptomatic.
- It will no longer be recommended that non-symptomatic students or staff conduct RATs twice a week.
- RATs are also required to be used for 5 days if a student or staff member is a close contact of a confirmed case and they are attending or working at a school.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
- If your child is not experiencing COVID-19 symptoms, they can continue to attend school, but you should monitor for symptoms.
- Students who show symptoms of COVID-19 cannot attend school and should get tested immediately and isolate until they receive a negative result.
- Students who have recovered from COVID-19 do not need to participate in surveillance testing for 60 days after their isolation period has ended.
- For information on symptoms visit: https://www.coronavirus.vic.gov.au/symptoms-and-risks.
- For more information on how to get tested visit: https://www.coronavirus.vic.gov.au/taking-test-covid-19.
If your child returns a positive result, your child has COVID-19. You must:
- quarantine your child for seven days
- advise the school about the positive result
- Your child must stay home until their symptoms have resolved and they are well
Reporting your child’s positive test
If your child was at school when they were infectious you need to report the positive case through the Student COVID-19 Test Portal or you can notify the school in writing or by phone.
You must also report your child’s positive test to the Department of Health via the COVID-19 Positive Rapid Antigen Test Self-Reporting Form or call centre on 1800 675 398.
