What a creative week we experienced at Newcomb Secondary College last week! Book Week 2024 was a blast, and it was great to see so many staff and students dress up as a character or aspect of a book that they associate with or have read- see the image of a few of our staff in costume below. There are many photos of our students in their Book Week costumes in the Be Bold Be Heard newsletter article and on Newcomb Secondary College's social media too.
It was also noteworthy and appropriate that we celebrated the 2024 Year 9/10 Creative Writing Anthology Launch on Thursday featuring several very talented student authors, led, and supported by Mrs Wray. This is a great achievement to have a been able to contribute to a fully published book at such a young age, yet alone at all in one’s entire life- congratulations to all and we look forward to hopefully one-day reading many more of your books!
Further highlighting the talents of Newcomb Secondary College students, we must congratulate our Senior Band Tour students on a very successful Tour of Westen Victoria. We are so blessed to have such great ambassadors for Newcomb Secondary College, and it is great to see the acknowledgement of the amazing musical skills the band members receive from schools and communities outside of our local region. We are very proud of you all and thank you for the way you promote our college so admirably when given the opportunity.
On Monday morning, bright and early, a number of students set off on our annual Ski Trip. This is always a great experience for our students- hopefully, there is enough snow on the slopes this year. We will soon find out when they return on Friday.
Newcomb Secondary College is fortunate enough to have a Doctors in Schools Program running 2 days a week.
We have both a GP, and Mental Health Nurse that attend onsite to run a clinic on a Tuesday and Wednesday. This clinic is for any student in Years 7-12. The appointments are bulk billed, meaning that there is no cost to families.

This week's focus is information on how to have important conversations about drugs from the Alcohol and Drug Foundation.
Drug use can be tricky to talk about. It’s a personal and sometimes sensitive issue. Understanding drugs and why people might use them can help start an open and supportive conversation.
On August 16th our Year 7 and 8 students and staff were able to enjoy experiencing international stories and personal narratives from Mr Andy Wright.
Andy Wright is a world-class performer having spent over 25 years telling stories to audiences in schools, theatres, and festivals throughout Europe, South America, Asia, Australia and New Zealand. He has told stories in over 50 different countries to thousands of children and adults. He is committed to helping children, adults, and schools communicate better, discover their own stories, celebrate their own culture and the culture of others.
Andy encouraged our Newcomb Secondary College students to write creatively using their 5 senses. We enjoyed hearing the historical and geographical backgrounds to his stories especially those from New Zealand and performing one version of a Māori haka together. We are looking forward to his return next year after touring South American schools.
We are still taking book donations until Thursday 29/08 then the big count and sort begins. 1 house point per book donated and 50 extra points to the winning house! Books will be donated to our local primary schools, kindergartens and retirement homes. Please drop your books in the house boxes in the school library! Thank you.
WHOLE SCHOOL DRESS UP DAY THURSDAY AUGUST 22ND 2024
On Thursday, August 22nd, the BBBH girls planned a Book Week Dress Up Day. The theme this year was ‘Reading is Magic’ so we asked students to dress up as something magical or as a character from their favourite book. There was a ‘parade’ during recess in the library for those who wished to enter the competition. Prizes were awarded (CANTEEN VOUCHERS!) for best dressed in each year level. Well done to all of our contestants and to Ms Stoneley, Ms Wray, Miss Marshall and to all the teachers who dressed up and for helping out.
* Tuesdays (Weekly): Games Club - Board games, movies, karaoke and popcorn!
Joining in and having fun is central to the success of Games Club. Students love having access to the VR Xbox, Nintendo switch, board and card games! There will also be special craft activities and theme days!
