From the Principal Team
Newcomb Secondary College is committed to the safety and wellbeing of all of our children and young people. Our school community recognises the importance of, and a responsibility for, ensuring our school is a safe, supportive and enriching environment which respects and fosters the dignity and self-esteem of all children and young people, and enables them to thrive in their learning and development.
In recognition of this, and informed by the revised Child Safe Guidelines announced by the Victorian Government in July of this year, we have developed a Code of Conduct to inform all of our College programs and practices.
This Code of Conduct aims to protect children and reduce any opportunities for child abuse or harm to occur. It also assists in understanding how to avoid or better manage risky behaviours and situations. It is intended to complement child protection legislation, Department policy, school policies and procedures and professional standards, codes or ethics as these apply to staff and other personnel.
The Child Safe Standards have been updated to include the following priorities and objectives:
- to involve families and communities in organisations’ efforts to keep children and young people safe
- for a greater focus on safety for Aboriginal children and young people
- to manage the risk of child abuse in online environments
- for greater clarity on the governance, systems and processes to keep children and young people safe
Further information about the Standards can be accessed on the Victorian Government’s Commission for Children and Young People Website (link below), and our Code of Conduct will be available on our College Website for anybody wishing to learn more.

Schoolwide Positive Behaviour
9. Be a positive role model for Newcomb Secondary College when in the community. Is our SWPBS "I am proud of my school"
As a member of any community, it is important to model yourself in a way that helps to positively influence and support those around you.
For students at Newcomb Secondary, this is two fold – being influenced and influencing peers. Showing up to school, ready to learn with a positive attitude and being proud of Newcomb Secondary College and all it has to offer in terms of opportunities, will rub off on others and lead to improved success.
Students see and are influenced by the successes and positive attitudes of others students; same age, older and younger. Being influenced by this role modelling helps to positively influence and shape that young person into being their best selves. Having self awareness of how you shape and impact others around you is a necessary skill, not only as you operate as a valued member in your school and local community, but also how you operate as a good friend, partner and parent.
You can make a difference on those around you and help each other in striving to be the best version of you!
Senior School Report

Senior School Report
Senior School students have been working hard recently, with many SACs, deadlines, applications and much more happening.
The Year 12 VCE students are working through final stages of their studies, gearing up for the final push to end of year exams. Students have been demonstrating collaboration and critical and creative thinking while using their study periods to go over notes, seek out help from their teachers and work collaboratively on tasks.
Year 12 VCAL students have been working equally as hard, with many starting to finalise their VCAL subjects and prepare to turn current part time school-based apprenticeships into full time. Students have been communicating effectively with peers and staff and seeking out support to get their work completed and marked as competent. Demonstrating problem solving skills and resilience has proven successful this year, with most nearly fully competent in their VCAL studies.
There have been many questions flying around about the Year 12 Graduation and students are getting excited for this event, a highlight of the Newcomb Secondary College Calendar. More information about this will be coming out in the near future, so stay tuned for that!
Year 11 VCAL and VCE students have all been hard at work, trying to meet deadlines for outcomes, VET courses, SATs. Most students have recently met with our Pathways team to talk about courses and possible transitions after they complete their Year 12 studies. Many are excited to think and chat about what the future might hold for them and have started exploring University TAFE campuses to see where they can see themselves in a few years time.
I encourage all the Senior students to keep demonstrating all the learning qualities needed for success – collaboration, communication, resilience, critical and creative thinking and problem solving. Talk with your parents and carers about school and any supports you may need to stay on track and obtain the successes in your school work that you are capable of achieving. And continue to use the supports provided to you at school: ask questions, seek out answers, talk with your teachers and collaborate with peers. Maintain the momentum for the remainder of Term 3 and into Term 4 to be the best you can be.

Years 73, 81 & 82
Last week students in Years 73, 81 and 82 explored the concept of the "double chance" for the top 4 teams in the top 8 system of sporting finals that occur at this time of the year.
After discussing as a class the structures of their own local team's league finals, we generated many finals (15 to 20 years worth) over 3 tables of dice games in each class. There was much fun to be had.
The probability results were a 4:1 chance in group 82 and a 3:1 chance in the other 2 classes. One student in Group 82 won all of 6 straight Grand Finals, much to the disbelief of the class. After throwing mostly 6s they are now considering a career as a professional gambler.

Whittington Primary School Transition Visit
On Tuesday 30th August, we had our grade 5 friends from Whittington Primary School come for a visit to experience a taster session in our specialist On2Wheels program. Mr Unmack and Mr Klingberg taught the grade 5 students how to change and repair a tyre puncture- what a useful skill to acquire!
We have also welcomed the grade 5/6 students from Tate Street Primary School who were lucky enough to experience a taster session with the drones in our Auditorium space with Mr Relouw. TSPS also had a taster session in our ceramics studio with Miss Hill, it was wonderful to see the pinch pots created and impressive team work from TSPS students.
Once again a massive thank you to Mr Relouw, Mr Unmack, Mr Klingberg, Mr Amer, Tania Reed, Mrs Honeywell, Miss Boland and Miss Hill for their involvement in the running of these activities.
