Visit to Parliament House - Mr Murphy
On Monday, November 21st, I was very fortunate to have been invited to meet with a number of our federal politicians to discuss educational opportunities and challenges in Victorian schools. These meetings involved several Members of Parliament, including Daniel Mulino, Tracey Roberts and Nola Marino, in addition to meeting with senior ministerial advisors to Jim Chalmers, Jason Clare, Kristy McBain and Brendan O’Connor.
The conversations with these leaders focused on the challenges we have all felt this year in our return to a full onsite program, after two years of highly interrupted teaching and learning. We also discussed a range of possibilities associated with teacher training programs and initiatives, ensuring that individuals transitioning into an educational career pathway have the rights skills, perspectives and understandings needed to thrive in the role.
I spoke with great pride about the range of programs and supports offered to the students of Newcomb Secondary College, and have also invited a number of federal politicians to visit our great school, in the event of them ever passing through this part of the state. Overall, I feel quite grateful for this incredible experience to meet with our nation’s leaders inside the walls of Parliament House, and to discuss the work that I feel so passionately about, and the school that I am so proud to be a part of.

2023 Orientation Program & End of Year 2022 Programs
It always seems surreal at this time of the school year that despite the focus on the current learning and assessment program, we focus much of our energy and planning on the following years learning program- no wonder many of us forget what year it actually is! So to make sense of this, here is the breakdown and dates to take note of-
1. Promotions Program (Year 12 2023)
This program, commencing November 14 and running for 2-weeks, allows the 2023 Year 12 students to commence their Unit 3 courses with their teachers prior to the end of 2022.
2. Inclusion Transition Program
This program, commencing November 15, caters for our new Year 7 students joining the college in 2023. The students participating in this extended transition program have been selected in consultation with our Feeder schools and Newcomb SC.
3. Assessment Week- End of 2022 Learning program
The assessment week, commencing November 21 for 1-week, is the last week of regular 2022 classes for students in Years 7-10. This week offers students the opportunity to work closely with their teachers to ensure they have all assessment tasks submitted.
4. Promotions Program (Year 8-11 2023)
This program, commencing November 28 and running for 1-week, allows the 2023 Year 8- 11 students to commence their 2023 courses with their teachers prior to the end of 2022. This opportunity allows students to get a taste for their 2023 subjects and courses and prepare for the year of learning ahead. The program prepares students, provides a chance to iron out any issues and thus commence 2023 when students return without further disruption.
5. Orientation Program (Year 7 2023)
This program day on December 13 welcomes our new Year 7 students for 2023. These excited students will have the opportunity to start to feel comfortable at Newcomb Secondary College. Students will be provided lots of information, tour the school, meet some of their teachers, enjoy some activities and of course, meet their student peers. It is a great day, and for most, it is a day that sits forever in their memories and facilitates the start of many new life-long friendships.
6. End of Year Program (Year 7-10 2022)
This program, commencing December 5 for 2-weeks, will bring the 2022 school year to a close with fun and engaging activities, experiences and learning tasks. Students will participate in series of focus days led by the Learning Area teams featuring group-work, challenges and excursions.

84 Waggas and the Art of Making Do
Last Thursday 17th November, our dynamic Year 84 team participated in a joint research project with the Geelong Wool Museum and Deakin University.
Researchers Eve Mayes and Merinda Kelly enjoyed the honesty and openness of our students when they shared their ideas about how to make museums more accessible to young people into the future.
It was fun to experience a great exhibition delving into our history, as well giving the next generation an opportunity to be heard. An event that celebrated student voice and agency. 😊 A proud day for Mr Davis and Mrs Honeywell

9/10 Outdoor Ed Snorkelling
On Wednesday 16th of November 9/10 Outdoor Ed made their way to Indented Head to snorkel around the famous Ozone shipwreck.
Despite a large amount of rain and unusual cold weather for this time of the year, the conditions and water clarity were perfect.
Students were able to swim in and around the wreck witnessing a variety of sea life that included stingrays, clown fish and pufferfish along with marine habitats underneath.
The students were able to apply their newly learnt beach safety and snorkelling techniques they recently studied and practiced the week before.
Big thanks to Mr Relouw, Mr Bamford for helping out with the day.

When The Light Went Walking’ mirrors our world’s time of change and the political landscape surrounding the theme of ‘consent.’

‘When The Light Went Walking’ is funny, sad, confronting, and empowering, but ultimately shows how everyone can find their own light, even when the world feels dark.
