Mothers' Day
It goes without saying that I open this Newsletter article by acknowledging all of the wonderful mothers in our community and in our lives. I certainly hope that each and every mother in our community had a fantastic day on Mothers' Day and that those special children of each family managed to spoil their mothers.
Whilst I accept that the recognition each year on Mothers' Day is important, I do encourage those in our community to appreciate and acknowledge all that the mothers in our lives have done, and continue to do, in support of their children more than on one day of the year!
Mr Honeywell
Last Friday we celebrated the education journey and leadership of Phil Honeywell. It was a fantastic event that recognised Phil and his contributions to the lives of so many as Principal of Newcomb Secondary College for 16 years. Many a tale was told amongst the gathering on the night, and it truly was a fitting send off for Phil. Thank you to all who contributed to the planning and facilitation of this special event.
Outdoor Education Brisbane Ranges Camp
Our 9/10 Outdoor Education students returned to Newcomb Secondary College on Friday after completing a highly successful 3-day bushwalk in the Brisbane Ranges. The bushwalk has been heralded as the best ever with ideal conditions, great staff and a brilliant, motivated, and supportive group of students sharing in the experience together. Well done to Mr Goward, Mrs Wray, and Mr Relouw for supporting the students on the camp.
Upcoming Year 7 Camp
It seems that every week that I write this piece for the Newsletter, there are so many highlights to reflect upon or upcoming events and activities to be excited about. One of those takes place next week, that being our Year 7 students will have their opportunity to experience the 3-day camp in Anglesea. The Year 7 camp is always a highly anticipated camp and a highlight experience for students on many levels. I know that I remember my Year 7 camp and assume you can also!
Positive Learning Qualities & Organisation
It should be noted that Term 2 is a nine-week term. This week is Week 4. What that means is that students will need to be conscious of their subject timelines for assessments and task completion. It is important in life to be organised and it is a skill that we encourage and support our students with through means of unit plans, learning task communications or Compass news feeds and of course assessment deadlines. Schools are busy places. Life as a student is a busy time. Organisation in learning, and in life, is a must!
Feedback Week is next week (Week 5) and thus teachers will be sharing learning feedback on all students through the Positive Learning Qualities (PLQ’s). You would be familiar that the PLQ’s focus on our school values of Learning, Respect and Working Together. The presentation of the PLQ’s that you will receive on Friday May 26 will demonstrate a pattern or trend as you will be able to see the results of the PLQ’s in that subject from the middle of Term 1, end of Term 1 and middle of Term 2 in three bar chart displays (see below). This visual trend will assist in enabling you to have informed, open, and honest discussions with your student regarding their learning progress and opportunities for areas to improve in moving forward.

Safety When Arriving and Departing Newcomb Secondary College
The safety of our entire community is of the greatest importance to us. We are constantly seeking to make the school safer, and one of the things you can help us with is ensuring that all students moving to and from school at the beginning and end of the day do so sensibly and carefully.
As part of this, please remind your young person that:
- They should use the crossing when crossing the Bellarine Highway.
- If crossing a road or driveway, they should wait until the bus has departed before attempting to cross. Avoiding moving in front of the bus which could limit oncoming traffic’s visibility.
- Use the two pedestrian gates when entering or leaving the front of the school.
- Avoid using the carpark of the neighbouring shopping centre.

Attendance
Under the Victorian Attendance Legislation, all Victorian government schools must contact parents/carers as soon as practicable on the same day of an unexplained student absence.
The same-day notification requirement supports the safety and wellbeing of all students. Schools need to know when and why a child is absent and parents/carers need to know if their child is not at school.
Please notify the school as soon as possible on the same day of an absence, if your student is late or if they need to leave early, by either phoning the school or entering an Attendance Note on your student’s Compass.
We recognise that family life is demanding and busy, and we believe it is essential that the school and family work together in partnership to ensure we achieve the best outcomes for your child. If you have any questions or concerns about attendance, refusal, using Compass or absences, please contact the school on 5248 1400 or email to ensure we can support you and your student.
At Newcomb Secondary College we strive for high attendance to maximise student learning, and behavioural, cognitive and emotional engagement for all students, and we endeavour to work with and support all families in our community.
Ms Demopoulos
Senior AFLW
The Senior AFLW footy squad consisted of one Year 12, ten Year 11s, six Year 10s and three Year 9 students, of whom only four were experienced club players with a working knowledge of the rules, positions, and tactics.
Dakota was appointed coach and Phoebe captain.
To prepare for the Interschool tournament, we had four Wednesday lunchtime training sessions where we focussed on our kicking and marking skills.
On the day of the competition, our first opponent had clearly got wind of the enormous distances that our players were hoofing the footballs at training and didn’t show up.
They hadn’t heard that our gun Year 11 club players Dakota and Chantelle were unable to play due to injuries.
This meant that Surf Coast SC had to take the field at a moment’s notice and although they had many skilful clubbies, they underestimated not only our enthusiasm and vigour, but our kicking range.
With our on-ball ruck Phoebe dominating and our speedy midfielders Chloe L, Eloise and Jewelea sprinting clear of the packs, Surf Coast were bunching up too close to the packs and we were able to clear the opposition to find our forwards in space.
We continued to rack up scores for a handy halftime lead before Surf Coast regrouped, got their team game going and started to get on top in the second half.
Phoebe and our speedy midfielders continued to dominate the packs, but as Surf Coast rallied and surged forward, they were held up and repelled time and again by our wonderful marking defenders Abby, Georga and Emily who kicked the ball clear, great distances into our attack. Half backs Shea and Katelin read the play well and intercepted some promising attacks.
Every one of our players excelled at tackling and chasing and our victory was well deserved.
It was a fantastic team effort with Phoebe the standout “best on ground”.
As the game concluded we were notified that due to a redraw of the fixture we were required to play again immediately after a break of only 5 minutes.
Our second opponent, Oberon SC was generally bigger, classier, and even more experienced than Surf Coast.
Undaunted, our players launched into the game with gusto and great team work.
The speedy Chloe L impressed again with her ball winning and chase down tackles and Millie took some nice marks while Eloise was an effective, dangerous forward. Millie passed to Remy, who took a great mark and kicked truly, through the centre of the big sticks, well over post high. Our great start saw us level at a goal apiece. Then Oberon’s superior skills, fitness and experience saw them take over and run out easy winners, even against our valiant efforts, with everyone playing at their very best.
Phoebe was heroic, dominating the ruck by winning all the hit outs and racking up many possessions all over the field.
After a long wait for a final consolation game, the team drawn to oppose us pulled out, claiming that they had too many injuries and so we played the strong Surf Coast team for a second time.
Our Goal Umpire support students Emma and Mia had a run and while it was a competitive and close game Surf Coast played very well for the narrow win.
The weather was perfect, and a great time was had by all. Many students reported to school the next day stiff and sore, but happy.

Senior Boys' AFL
The Newcomb Secondary Senior Boys AFL Team headed out to Herne Hill, to compete in the Interschool AFL Competition.
The side was captained by Matty Harrison and coached by Mr Bell and Mr Pugliese.
The first match up drew Northern Bay, with things looking rough in the first quarter with an early injury to Ollie Foot and being down three goals. Inspired by the words of wisdom of Mr Pugliese, Newcomb Secondary College kicked six unanswered in the second term and did not look back at the end of the four quarters winning by ten goals.
Jack Brough, Jaykeb Payley, Bailey Thomas and Jack Scanlon, all had a major influence on the game, and played exceptionally well.
This effort got us into the Preliminary Final against a well-constructed Western Heights Team.
Unfortunately, Newcomb Secondary College, was unable to get over the line despite some interesting tactics by the coaching team.
We would like to thank Riley Cameron, who was our goal umpire, who did a fantastic job for the team.
Additionally, we would also like to thank Simone Datson for taking some awesome photos and supporting our Team on the sidelines.
Lastly, Mr Pugliese and I would also like to personally commend the boys on their fantastic Team Spirit, effort, and camaraderie throughout the day. It was a privilege to both be a part of such a fantastic day!
Go Seahorses!
