Matilda’s Influence
I am not sure that any of us could have expected that the Women’s World Cup would have captivated us all in the way that it did over the last month.
It has brought a diverse nation together and inspired us all. The team have carried themselves so admirably given the enormous weight of the nation riding on their shoulders that could easily have (quite understandably) consumed them.
They displayed outstanding qualities throughout the tournament- courage, resilience, determination, sublime skill, poise, as well as tremendous sportsmanship and teamwork. They have transformed sport in this country for ever, but arguably the impact of their influence has far greater impact than just on the sporting field.
The Matilda’s heroics has been an inspiration to all Australians.
In a time in society that is too frequently challenged by incidents of division and hardship, this moment in time has the power to act in a positive light to reassure us all that we are one, brought together to collectively thrive on this land that we call home.
Newcomb Secondary College has been a school that continues to embrace and celebrate inclusion.
We are proud that our contributions towards a harmonious and connected civil society remain at the forefront of our curriculum programs and our school charter. We hope that the legacy of the Matilda’s in 2023 will continue to shape and grow not only the current generation of people, but equally, act as a further inspiration for the next generation of young people to positively influence their own lives, and that of the lives around them. We hope this experience will inspire our young people to dream big, work hard, celebrate diversity, be considerate of each other and always remain inclusive. It is so exciting to think about just what may be possible. I personally cannot wait to find out!
Professional Learning Day & Professional Practice Day for Staff
On Thursday, 7 September the staff have a Professional Learning Day. As such, this is a Pupil Free Day.
Thursday, 5 October is a Staff Professional Practice Day (PPD) and as such, no regular classes will be conducted for the students on this day.
Newcomb Secondary College Senior Concert Band Tour
On Monday, we wished our Senior Concert Band well as they set out on their five-day band tour throughout central Victoria. The tour will be based out of Bendigo and will see Newcomb Secondary College students perform at six schools- Kalinna Special School, Kangaroo Flat Primary School, Violet Street Primary School, Axedale Primary School, Lightning Reef Primary School, and St Joseph’s Primary School. It will be a fantastic opportunity for the students to perform ‘on-the-road’ and put into practice the tirelessly hours of rehearsal that they have undertaken in preparation for this wonderful experience.
Wear it Purple Day- A message from the Department of Education
The Department of Education has a clear commitment to ensuring all Victorian government schools are respectful, safe, and inclusive places of learning and work for all students, staff, and members of our school communities. As part of this commitment, the department is encouraging all schools to join the many other schools and workplaces across the country to recognise and celebrate Wear it Purple Day on Friday 25 August 2023.
This is to support all lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and gender diverse, intersex, queer and questioning (LGBTIQ+) young people in our schools and the community, in accordance with the obligations in the Child Safe Standards to uphold diversity and equity for everyone regardless of their background, characteristics or beliefs. The day is organised by Wear it Purple, a student-run, not-for-profit organisation.
At Newcomb Secondary College, we welcome anyone who wants to wear purple on the day to do so, to show their support. For more information on the day, visit the Wear It Purple website. If you have any queries about this initiative, you can contact the department by email at enquiries@education.vic.gov.au.
Have a great week!

Parent and Caregiver Opinion Survey
2023 Parent / Carer Opinion Survey
The school is conducting a survey to find out what parents and carers think of our school. The Parent and Carer Opinion Survey is an annual survey offered by the Department of Education that is designed to assist schools in gaining an understanding of families’ perceptions of school climate, student behaviour, and student engagement.
We encourage all selected families to participate. Our school will use the survey results to help inform and direct future school planning and improvement strategies.
A random sample of approximately 30 per cent of parents and carers have been selected to participate in this year’s survey.
The Parent/Carer/Guardian Opinion Survey will be open from Friday 11 August to Friday 8 September 2023.
The survey will be conducted online, only taking 20 minutes to complete, and can be accessed at any convenient time within the survey period on desktop computers, laptops, tablets or smartphones. The online survey will be available in English and 10 other languages.
We thank our families for participating in the Parent/Carer Opinion Survey.
