From the Principal Team
By Mr Scott McLeod
Can you believe that we have reached the mid-way mark of Term 1? Where did that time go?
COLLEGE FEEDBACK WEEK
This week is Week 5, and it signifies our College Feedback week. During the course of this week, teachers will be entering feedback on your students’ outcomes and growth against our college values of Learning, Respect and Working Together. The Feedback collated will then be shared with you on Compass in the form of our Positive Learning Qualities (PLQ). The PLQ feedback will be presented in an easy-to-read graphical representation and will be repeated on four occasions across Semester 1, allowing you to observe and identify any trends in your students’ outcomes. In addition to the PLQ feedback, remember to keep up-to-date and informed of your students’ achievements via their Learning Task results on Compass. Newcomb Secondary College staff also share observations and achievements against our Positive Futures Framework via our Positive Acknowledgements on Compass. These can occur at any time when observed, so it is important that you continue to stay connected to Compass. We encourage you to have frequent discussions with your student about their progress at school, and also encourage you to reach out to our awesome staff (wellbeing, learning mentors, teachers) should we be able to further inform and support you and your student.
COMMENDATION OF STUDENTS
Last week, I had the pleasure of sending home over sixty Principal Letters of Commendation to students who have commenced the year in a positive manner. Recognising and commending students for positive behaviours and achievement is something I believe is extremely important and I trust that the letters were well-received by student and parents/ guardians.
STUDENT REFLECTIONS
Week 5 of Term 1 is also a timely opportunity for all students to reflect on their standing as a Newcomb Secondary College student. A chance to reflect on how they co-exist in the school community at Lunch and Recess, how they present in the full School Uniform and how they approach their learning, support others, and represent the college in the broader community.
One area of focus that is an annual challenge for a selection of students as the weather cools is uniform. Newcomb Secondary Collage has a number of supports for students regarding uniform and adopts a thoroughly considered school uniform. The Uniform policy is continually reviewed by our students through the leaders and SLAM (Student Leadership Action Meeting) team members offering student voice to the uniform items. This is followed by a rigorous and considered process at School Council for which suggestions are tabled, cost is considered, and decisions made for all members of the College community. Newcomb Secondary College leadership, Student Support, Wellbeing, and staff will be focussing on uniform standards over the course of the next fortnight.
Below is a copy of the Newcomb Secondary College School Uniform items as can be purchased from our uniform supplier- PSW. Note that items such as hoodies, bomber jackets, black tracksuit pants and jeans are not permitted and students wearing them at school will respectfully be asked to remove them. We do hope for your support in valuing the presentation of Newcomb Secondary College students in-line with our policy- together we can make a difference!
RONE @ NEWCOMB SECONDARY COLLEGE
I would like to conclude on a high note and mention how excited and privileged Newcomb Secondary College is to have RONE collaborating with our students on what will be a magical artwork feature for our school. The feature concept is one of student voice and agency. Given the international status of RONE, it is no doubt going to be an iconic feature of our school and one that will attract much coverage and interest in the local and international community. This is a unique opportunity for Newcomb Secondary College, in-fact for any school in this country. We are so fortunate to be able to have RONE supporting our college in such a fantastic and long-lasting way!
