Information Evening 2022
On Monday April 4, we will be holding our annual Information Evening for prospective 2023 students. It is an evening that we thoroughly enjoy as a college as it offers an opportunity for Newcomb Secondary College to showcase all that is great about the college to future students and their families.
Transition Program 2022
Over the course of Term 1, we have been fortunate enough to once again have an opportunity to welcome our feeder school students back into Newcomb Secondary College. This is a fantastic opportunity for those primary school students in grades 3-6 to share in our facilities, take part in our learning programs and experience life at a secondary school. It is priceless to see the rich learning in action and the wonderful smiles on the faces of the primary school students participating in the program. Thus far we have, or will have welcomed students from Newcomb Park, Leopold, Tate Street, and Whittington Primary Schools.

Clean Up Australia Day
Written by Kiara Flakemore
On Friday the 18th of March the VCAL students participated in Clean up Australia Day. We started off at Limeburner’s Point and finished off at Eastern beach. We all split off into 4 small groups and went our separate ways. The weather started off great but soon turned terrible with rain, the whole class got soaking wet on our walk back to the buses. We all collected quite a lot of rubbish. My group found a lot of empty drink containers, cigarette butts and loose plastics.
We had a member of the public come up to us and ask us if it was Clean up Australia today, I said no it wasn’t it was on the 6th March but our school is doing it today to help keep the community clean and tidy and to help clean up rubbish instead of letting it go in the ocean and hurt our poor animals. Overall, I think we did a good job to collect as much rubbish as we could in the short time we had. We could have gotten more if the rain didn’t have a mind of its own and stopped us. Clean Up Australia Day is a great cause and I’m very proud to be one of the people to help and protected the environment.
Even if you can’t clean up you can donate and that will help out a lot.
Here is some feedback from a few of our staff and students on how the day went.
Bella B – “I think today was successful and fun, we worked productively as a group and the only thing that turned out negatively was the weather. We got rained on but still stayed positive throughout the day.”
Tahlia B – “Today was a great day, I had heaps of fun with my group, we picked up a lot of rubbish which was great, but we did see some really gross and smelly stuff. We had a great experience helping our environment.”
Georga D – “Today we picked up a lot of rubbish for our environment. All the small groups got a lot of rubbish, I felt like it went really well and we all put the effort in to tidy up the area. We did the best we could do with the weather conditions.”
Ms Mary – “I thought the day went very well. All the students who attended got involved and were picking up rubbish. Despite the rain, students stayed positive and happy.”
Mark Smith Author Talk
Written by Ruby-Rose
On the 15th of March the Year 9 students got the amazing opportunity to talk with the author of the road to winter trilogy (The road to winter, Wilder country, Land of fences) by Mark Smith. The students were able to get inciting knowledge from the author himself. He spoke about his journey of becoming an author, and about his feelings regarding the books supplied by the school's curriculum. The year 9’s asked thought provoking questions that helped them get an insight on not only his process of writing the books, but also the themes in the book.

As part of his Certificate II in Engineering Studies, Bailey has been offered a regular work placement at one of our industry partners - Barwon Health Biomed team.
This team maintains all the medical equipment at University Hospital, the Grace McKellar Centre plus many other regional locations.
On his recent visit Bailey, who has an interest in mechanical engineering, got to meet the manager and the team members and see various examples of medical equipment that they maintain and was shown where his desk will be when he commences his “on the job” work placement this week.
Thanks again to Tung the manager and his team for their ongoing support of our Program.
Year 7 Beach Day
This year the Year 7 beach day at Ocean Grove was run on Friday 18th March. All year 7 groups were graced with some incredibly unpredictable weather; overcast, heavy rain and concluding with some amazing sunshine.
The day was designed for our year 7 students to have fun, get to know each other a little better and try something new. The activities on offer were: Surfing, Beach Games, Beach walk and a BBQ lunch.
Strong swell meant that plenty of students were given a push for a fabulous surfing experience. Mr Amer, Mr Goward, Miss Hill and Miss Osborne were the expert instructors giving the kids the confidence to venture out into the surf. We are happy to announce that among the year 7 cohort we had some students who were able to stand up all the way to the shore. Well done!
Mr Unmack’s Great Beach Games were a great success, despite some heavy rain. Students participated in a variety of activities which involved jenga, tennis ball catapult, treasure hunt for letters to create an unknown word and a “hole in my bucket” activity along with several other fun challenges.
All students had a great time, with their Home Groups teachers; Mr Klingberg, Ms Wray and Mr Curnick. They were treated with food and beverages, including snags that were cooked to perfection and the soft drink cans were nice and cold.
Thanks to Mr Klingberg, Mr Amer, Mr Goward, Ms Wray, Mr Curnick, Mr Unmack, Ms Hill, Ms Osborne, Ms Muir, Ms Packer and Mr Pugliese for helping make Beach Day great.

Clubs, associations and organisations must be registered as a Get Active Kids Voucher Activity Provider to be able to redeem vouchers. To be eligible they must be affiliated with a recognised State Sporting Association or equivalent governing body. The program is open to Victorian children aged up to 18, named on a valid Commonwealth Health Care Card or Pensioner Concession Card and named on a valid Medicare Card at the time of application.
