End of Term Progress Report
Newcomb Secondary College values feedback on learning and outcomes, and endeavours to ensure that the quality of feedback is at the upmost standard. With that in mind, staff have been reviewing our Student Report product as next week we share our end of Term reports, you will notice a difference. The Reports that will be shared will have been developed to align a number of Newcomb Secondary College teaching and learning models deemed important to future student success, including the Positive Futures Framework, School Wide Positive Behaviour and our Berry St Training. The report presentation will feature a graphical continuum, allowing the viewer to easily take in the information and identify patterns in growth and outcomes.
The areas of focus on the reports will be:

PST Interviews- Thursday April 28 (4-7pm) & Friday April 29 (9-12pm)
As Term 1 winds down, we start to shift our focus to Term 2. In the first week of Term 2, we will be conducting our Parent/Student/Teacher Conferences. The PST conferences are an important part of supporting student learning outcomes as it is well understood that a student will achieve most, and maximise their potential when supported by a team. As such, it is important that all members of a student team have a shared understanding of where their learning is at and what can be actioned to make further improvements/further growth. Parents and Guardians will have an opportunity to book a suitable time to attend the PTS Conferences. Next week a Compass message and instruction guide will be circulated to you all. The sessions available for the conferences are Thursday April 28 (4-7pm) and Friday April 29 (9-12pm). Conferences will take place at Newcomb Secondary College and we encourage you all to take part in the conversations.
Information Evening 2022
On Monday April 4, we will be holding our annual Information Evening for prospective 2023 students. It is an evening that we thoroughly enjoy as a college as it offers an opportunity for Newcomb Secondary College to showcase all that is great about the college to future students and their families.
Transition Program 2022
Over the course of Term 1, we have been fortunate enough to once again have an opportunity to welcome our feeder school students back into Newcomb Secondary College. This is a fantastic opportunity for those primary school students in grades 3-6 to share in our facilities, take part in our learning programs and experience life at a secondary school. It is priceless to see the rich learning in action and the wonderful smiles on the faces of the primary school students participating in the program. Thus far we have, or will have welcomed students from Newcomb Park, Leopold, Tate Street, and Whittington Primary Schools.

‘Conversation Curtain’ talks with Laine Hogarty
Artist exhibiting at Lorne’s Sculpture Biennale 2022
Last week we had the privilege of having Laine Hogarty come to speak with our Art and Technology students about her recent work at the Lorne Sculpture Biennale called ‘Conversation Curtain’.
We discussed the meanings and messages behind the ephemeral artwork and briefly about the design process that allowed her to make and present her very imposing public artwork on the Lorne foreshore.
The students were challenged to voice their opinions in response to the work and the ideas woven within the curtain. Laine’s work referenced the effects of early European settlement on the first nation’s people, the negative impacts humans have on the coastal environment and the effect of plastic waste in our oceans. Our students engaged in writing their responses about the topics raised on colourful ribbons that will be incorporated into Laine’s artwork by the beach.
What a privilege to be part of this exciting public art event, showing our students that they can contribute and have their voices heard through the Arts.

BLACK COCKATOO Performance at GPAC
Last week Ms Amanda Davis, Mrs Leech, Ms Hunt and Mrs Honeywell were excited to take a number of our Indigenous students along with the Year 9/10 Drama students to the wonderful BLACK COCKATOO performance at GPAC. We all enjoyed the experience of attending a magical, live, interactive performance. Bravo!
This is a short overview about the play from the program:
‘Over 150 years ago, 13 brave Aboriginal men in Western Victoria picked up their cricket bats and embarked on a treacherous voyage to England and into the unknown – all in the name of sport. Risking illness and persecution, Australia’s first international cricket team – including Australia’s first Indigenous sporting hero, Johnny Mullagh – amazed the English crowds with astonishing talent, personality and grit. They should have returned to Australia as celebrated heroes. Instead they came back to find the world they once knew was no longer there.
This is not just a story about cricket – this is story of strength, resistance, hope and possibility. When a group of young present-day activists sneak into the Wimmera Discovery Centre to expose the truth of what happened to Johnny and his team mates, a hidden legend of triumph and tragedy unfolds.
This is a new artistic collaboration between iconic Australian writer Geoffrey Atherden (MOTHER AND SON, BABAKIUERIA) and Sydney Festival Artistic Director Wesley Enoch (BLACK DIGGERS). Photo: Christian Trinder.

"Follow your interests", "witnessing hardship in Lombok was humbling", "do more things, don't stay inside and game all day".
These were some of the wise words shared by our Alumni Lachlan Copley (Class of 2016) when Lachlan returned to speak with current students on Monday 21st March.
Lachlan spoke to the Year 8 ECO class about all the life-changing benefits he experienced from studying Indonesian until Year 12, particularly the two study tours he undertook to our sister school in Lombok.
Lachlan has taken his Indonesian studies to the next level since school, obtaining an honours in International Relations with a major in Indonesian. He was also recently appointed the Vice-President of the Australia-Indonesia Youth Association Victoria! AIYA is a Non-Government Youth-Led organisation which aims to better connect young Indonesians and Australians to work and study opportunities, and to each other.
Lachlan aspires to work for DFAT (Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade). Lachlan highly encouraged our students to pursue further study even if they don't consider themselves very academic. Thank you so much for coming back to inspire our students, Lachlan, terima kasih banyak!

I’m writing to provide you with an update regarding the Andrews Labor Government’s Get Active Kids Program. Families can now apply for $200 Get Active Kids voucher online which can then be redeemed at a registered Get Active Kids Voucher Activity Provider – such as a local sporting club or organisation. Registered activity providers will lodge voucher codes with the Government to be credited the costs of registration and/or membership fees, while vouchers can also be used for costs associated with uniforms and equipment. Clubs, associations and organisations must be registered as a Get Active Kids Voucher Activity Provider to be able to redeem vouchers. To be eligible they must be affiliated with a recognised State Sporting Association or equivalent governing body. The program is open to Victorian children aged up to 18, named on a valid Commonwealth Health Care Card or Pensioner Concession Card and named on a valid Medicare Card at the time of application. A special consideration stream is also available to support children in care, temporary or provisional visa holders, undocumented migrants and international students up to 18 years at the time of application. Applications for this round close at 5pm on 31 May 2022. To support the transition to the new voucher claim system, families can continue to claim reimbursement for expenses already incurred in this round.
